Vision
At Tennessee Tech University, academic advising empowers all students to engage within their educational journey and academic and personal success by assisting them in navigating their unique paths towards degree completion, intellectual growth, and graduating career ready.
Mission
Academic advising at Tennessee Tech is centered on establishing a trusting relationship between advisors and their students. This practice assists students in navigating curricular, co-curricular, and exploratory programs that align with their interests and aspirational goals. Additionally, academic advising promotes opportunities for students to develop intellectually, embrace their creativity through their academic pursuit, connect with campus resources and programs, and graduate career ready.
Goals of Tennessee Tech's Academic Advising
The goals of academic advising include helping students:
- Clarify their life and career goals;
- develop appropriate educational plans;
- select courses and complementary educational experiences;
- interpret institutional academic requirements, policies, and procedures;
- enhance their awareness of available educational resources (such as internship opportunities, honors, and tutoring programs);
- evaluate their progress toward established goals and degree completion;
- assist them in completing degree requirements in a timely manner;
- proactively identify barriers to success and help students mitigate those challenges;
- develop decision-making skills;
- reinforce their self direction and self advocacy;
- seek out and use support services in the institution and the community;
- collect and distribute data regarding student needs, preferences and performance for use in making institutional decisions and policy.
