Important Information & Requirements

Although summer aid follows similar requirements to the Fall and Spring semesters, students who are interested in enrolling in summer courses must consider the following:

  • The cost for attending summer semester differs from Fall and Spring semesters. For summer tuition and fees information, visit the Bursar Office website.

  • To utilize federal and state aid for summer, students MUST submit their FAFSA application for the appropriate aid year and complete all FAFSA requirements on their account. For example, the 24/25 FAFSA covers Fall 2024, Spring 2025, and Summer 2025. So, if you want to use your aid for Summer 2025, make sure you submit your 24/25 FAFSA!

  • Awarded University Scholarships are only available for Fall and Spring semesters. Students cannot use their Tech Scholarships to help pay summer course costs. Students who receive External Scholarships specifically allotted to help cover summer costs can use the awards to help pay their summer balance, however students must follow the requirements given to them by their awarders.

Additionally, summer portions of aid and awards have specific requirements students must meet to receive them for summer. Please click on the drop-downs below to learn more about loan, PELL, and HOPE Scholarship eligibility requirements for summer.

  • Federal Loans

Students may have the option of utilizing a Federal Direct Student Loan for summer if they have not already borrowed their yearly loan limit during the Fall and Spring semesters. The amount of loan eligibility depends on the amount of loans previously borrowed, hours of enrollment and enrollment period, grade level in school, and dependency status.

Only courses that count towards a student's program of study will be considered to determine federal loan eligibility. Therefore, summer loan offers will only post for students have registered for at least half-time (6 semester hours for undergraduates and 5 semester hours for graduates) in courses required to complete their program of study.

Dependent students who have borrowed their maximum loan eligibility may want to consider a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan or an Alternative Loan

Please note that enrollment in Intersession Classes ONLY does NOT meet federal guidelines for the Federal Direct Student Loans. Therefore, if you only enroll in Intersession courses (May 12th – May 23rd), you will not be eligible to utilize Federal Loans for summer.

  • Federal PELL

Summer PELL eligibility is determined on an individual basis, based on hours enrolled and PELL funds already paid to the student during the Fall and Spring semesters.

If eligible, allotted summer PELL funds will post for the maximum amount eligible (full-time hours), and will pro-rate based on actual hours enrolled for courses that are required to complete the program of study. Click here to learn more about PELL eligibility.

Please note that enrollment in Intersession Classes ONLY does NOT meet federal guidelines for the PELL Grant. Therefore, if you only enroll in Intersession courses (May 12th – May 23rd), you will not be eligible to utilize Federal PELL funds.

  • HOPE Scholarship

As long as eligibility requirements are met, HOPE recipients can receive a full portion of their scholarship (or a prorated portion for part-time enrollment) for Summer semesters, even if they already received their HOPE for the Fall and Spring semesters of that academic year. To learn more about Summer HOPE requirements visit our Summer HOPE Eligibility page.

Please note that enrollment in Intersession Classes ONLY does NOT meet HOPE guidelines for the for the HOPE Scholarship. Therefore, if you only enroll in Intersession courses (May 12th – May 23rd), you will not be eligible to utilize your HOPE Scholarship - but remember, any attempted summer hours/grades DO count in determining future HOPE eligibility.

Summer Consortium

Tennessee Tech students may utilize their federal and state aid while studying at another college over the summer months by completing and submitting a Consortium Agreement. Students who are interested in applying for a Summer Consortium must note the following:

  • A summer consortium for financial aid purposes is only granted to students with extenuating circumstances. For example, a student that needs to take a course to graduate that Tech does not offer during the summer months has the option of submitting a Consortium so they can use their aid to enroll in the class at another institution. Additionally, students who want to enroll in summer classes at institutions located in their hometown are also eligible to complete a Consortium. Taking courses because they are less expensive or easier at another institution is not an extenuating circumstance and will not be approved.

  • Students must enroll in at least six credit hours to utilize their aid at another college during the summer months

  • Students must complete and submit the Consortium Agreement agreement form by June 4th with all required attachments and signatures for consideration.

  • If students wish to use the HOPE Scholarship for their Consortium, they must submit the TELS Consortium Agreement form in conjunction with the Consortium Agreement form. Please make sure to read all instructions carefully before submitting.

Satisfactory Academic Progress & Summer

Our Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Process is run after the end of every spring term for all current students. If a student does not meet SAP standards for federal financial aid at the end of the spring term, they may not be eligible for aid already awarded to them for summer. Students who do not meet SAP standards will need to submit a Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal to potentially have their aid reinstated. Click the link below to learn more about Satisfactory Academic Progress and submitting an appeal.
